Bainbridge Island Public
Schools
Bainbridge schools offer a well-balanced curriculum,
including programs for gifted students and special classes offered at all grade
levels for those with learning disabilities. A wide range of extracurricular
and sports activities are, included at the middle and high school levels, and
there is an indoor public pool located at the High School complex used by all
students through the curriculum. Marine Science studies are offered at all
levels, and classes are coordinated with the Kitsap County Marine Science
Center. Frequent field trips are taken to this facility for hands-on
experience. In addition, many programs are offered at the schools during the
regular school curriculum and summer months by the Bainbridge Island Park and
Recreation District.
The island is also host to numerous pre-schools, daycare
centers and private schools. For more advanced students, Bremerton's Olympic
College offers extension courses and associate degrees/academic transfer
programs. Here is a brief overview of the school program:
Elementary Schools K-4th: The elementary
schools (Blakely Elementary, Ordway Elementary, Wilkes Elementary) provide a
continuous progressive program of sequential skill instruction in reading,
mathematics and language arts. The "core" curriculum also includes social
studies, health, and science. Specialists at every grade level teach programs
in art, music, and physical education. Elementary counselors, librarians and
reading specialists provide support both to students and
teachers.
Middle Schools (2): The middle schools (Sakai
Intermediate School 5th and 6th grades and Woodward Middle School
7th & 8th grades) are designed to provide students with a smooth transition
from self-contained classrooms at the elementary level to departmental
organization at the high school. The required "core" program consists of
reading, language, arts, mathematics, social studies, science and physical
education. Courses in art, instrumental and vocal music, home and family
living, industrial arts, and computer literacy are offered as
electives.
Bainbridge Island High School (9-12): The high
school offers a variety of programs to accommodate students with different
academic, career, and personal interests. In addition to courses required for
graduation, a rigorous academic program is offered for college bound students.
Programs in automotive maintenance, business, and home and family living are
offered in the school. In addition, an arrangement with North Kitsap High
School allows students to pursue other vocational programs.
Alternative High Schools (2): Commodore Options
School and Eagle Harbor High School are designed to meet the needs of students
who desire an alternative approach to their high school
education.
Curriculum Development: Curriculum development
and a program review occur continuously in the school district. A six-year
cycle has been established to ensure that all program areas are reviewed and
updated on a regular basis. In addition, the School Board may designate special
areas for focus study. Under the direction of the Assistant
Superintendent/Curriculum Director, committees of teachers, principals, and
members of the community are formed each year to conduct the program reviews
and focus studies. Other opportunities for curriculum work include summer
workshops for curriculum writing and/or instructional materials. Teachers and
principals play an important role in curriculum decisions in the school
district.
Support Services: The district's support
personnel include school nurse, psychologists, disorder specialists, resource
room teachers, preschool education teacher, special services coordinator,
English as a second language teacher, and multi-cultural program coordinator.
The support staff, working jointly with classroom teachers, provides a large
variety of educational services for students with special
needs.
School Volunteers: One of the unique features
of the district is the active role of adult volunteers in the schools. Through
the effort of the Volunteer Coordinator, approximately 350 volunteers
contribute to school programs each year. The volunteers tutor students, assist
in classrooms, organize enrichment activities, and lecture or demonstrate in
their areas of expertise. This is one of the many examples of active
cooperation between the community and the schools. For more information, call:
